Shortly before 6:30 on the morning of Monday, March 29, 1999, the driver of Nissan Pathfinder was fatally injured as the result of an accident in the Third Street Tunnel.
The accident occurred when the operator of a Pathfinder, travelling northbound in the left lane of the Third Street Tunnel, lost control of his sports utility vehicle when he changed to the center lane to avoid a disabled auto. Consequently, the Pathfinder crossed over to the third lane and struck a Jeep Cherokee. The Pathfinder then returned to the center lane where it overturned, ejecting the operator.
DCFD emergency medical technicians and police were summoned to the scene. Subsequently, the driver of the Pathfinder was transported to Howard University Hospital where he was pronounced dead at 7:02 am. His identity is being withheld pending notification of his next-of-kin.
No other injuries were reported.
The circumstances of the accident are currently under investigation by the Metropolitan Police Department's Major Crash Investigations Unit.
