Hit and Run-Pedestrian Fatality in the 5000 Block of Benning Road, SE

Detectives from the Metropolitan Police Department’s Major Crash Investigations Unit are investigating a hit and run crash involving a pedestrian in the 5000 block of Benning Road, SE, which resulted in a fatality.

 

At approximately 3:50 am on Saturday, March 12, 2011, an adult male was operating a motorized wheel chair in or near the crosswalk, crossing Benning Road, SE at H Street.  A vehicle traveling north in the 5000 block of Benning Road, struck the pedestrian and the wheel chair causing the pedestrian to land in the 4900 block of Benning Road, SE.  The striking vehicle then proceeded north into the 4900 block of Benning Road, SE.  The vehicle was last seen westbound in the 4600 block of Hannah Place S.E.  The victim was transported to an area hospital where he was pronounced dead.

The decedent has been identified as 55 year-old Gary Green of Southeast, Washington, DC.

The vehicle is described as silver or light gray, late model 4 door Honda or Lexus with a sunroof, with heavy front end damage.
