Detectives from the Metropolitan Police Department’s Major Case Squad have announced that an arrest was made in the attempted armored car robbery which occurred in the 6500 block of Georgia Avenue, NW.
On Wednesday September 21, 2011, at approximately 10:50 am, units from the Fourth District responded to the 6500 block of Georgia Avenue, NW to investigate a robbery in progress with shots fired at the CVS store located at the 6500 block of Georgia Avenue NW. Upon arrival on the scene, they learned that an armored car was making a pickup at that location when one of the guards was approached by at least one armed subject who demanded the money being carried by the guard. The guard exchanged gunfire with at least one subject. The subject was later transported to a local hospital for multiple gunshot wounds. He was treated by hospital staff and eventually succumbed to his injuries.
The decedent has been identified as 27 year-old Kirk Anthony Dean of Northwest, DC.
Preliminary investigation revealed that the decedent was amongst the subjects attempting to rob the armored car guard as he was exiting the CVS store. Officers also stopped two other subjects in the vicinity of the crime scene. These subjects were transported to the Major Case/Cold Case Office. They were eventually charged with Attempted Armored Car Robbery. They have been identified as 26 year-old Darnell Crews and 21 year-old Anthony James, both of the 800 block of Butternut St. NW.
