The Metropolitan Police Department is investigating a death of an adult male that occurred while in police custody in the unit block of P Street, SW.
On Friday, June 8, 2012, at approximately 3:00 pm, members of the First District responded to the unit block of P Street, SW to assist personnel from the Department of Mental Health. Upon arrival, they located an adult male who became combative and assaulted four First District officers. The officers subdued him and placed him in handcuffs. The male then became unconscious. DC Fire and Emergency Medical Services personnel arrived on the scene and transported him to a local hospital where he subsequently died. The cause of death is pending an autopsy.
The four officers sustained non-life threatening injuries and have been placed on administrative leave with pay.
The decedent is identified as 38-year-old Anthony Chambers, whose address is unknown, at this time.
The Metropolitan Police Department’s Force Investigation Team of the Internal Affairs Division is conducting the investigation.
