Security Guard Wounded at Anacostia School

The incident occurred after security guards manning the metal detector and x-ray machine detected a handgun in one of the student's pants pockets. The student was detained and a female security guard kept her hand on the pocket containing the firearm while the student was escorted to the security office where security guards could safely take possession of the concealed handgun. Once inside of the security office, one of the security guards struggled to get his hand inside of the student's pocket to take possession of the weapon, however, the student would not take his hand off of the weapon. Consequently, the handgun discharged while still inside of the student's pocket, striking the security guard in the right hand. Subsequently, school security guards disarmed the student and detained him until police arrived.

The 25-year-old security guard, whose identity is being withheld because he is a witness in the case, was transported to D.C. General Hospital where he was treated and released. The 17-year- old male student, whose identity is being withheld because he is a juvenile, has been charged with Assault With a Dangerous Weapon (ADW) - Gun. He is scheduled to be arraigned today in D.C. Superior Court.
