Father Charged with Murder of His Daughter

This morning, a suspect was arrested in connection with the murder of one-year-old Antijania Lovett.

At 3:30 on the afternoon of Thursday, December 10, 1998, police and DCFD emergency medical technicians were called to an apartment inside of 3328 6th Street, SE for the report of an unconscious child. Subsequently, Antijania Lovett, of the unit block of L Place, NW, was transported to Greater Southeast Community Hospital where she was pronounced dead at 5:29 pm. Reportedly, Antijania was briefly left unattended while bathing in the bathtub.

An autopsy performed by the D.C. Medical Examiner's Office determined that the cause of Antijania's death was asphyxiation and the manner of her death was homicide.

The investigation conducted by detectives of the Metropolitan Police Department's Homicide Division led to the issuance of a D.C. Superior Court arrest warrant charging a suspect identified as the victim's father with Murder in the First Degree.

The suspect, 20-year-old Antjon Cornelius Lovett, of the 1200 block of I Street, SE, was apprehended in the 3300 block of 6th Street, SE at 7:10 am. He was arrested, without incident, by members of the department's Special Operations Division's Warrant Squad. He is scheduled to be arraigned today in D.C. Superior Court.
