At approximately 11:30 this morning, a 3rd District Metropolitan Police officer on routine patrol in the vicinity of the 2600 block of 13th Street, NW was flagged down by a citizen. He was advised that a male subject armed with a broken bottle was cutting himself with the bottle. The officer exited his patrol car, approached the suspect, and tried to persuade him to drop the broken bottle. Instead, the subject reportedly brandished the weapon and came at the officer. The suspect ignored repeated commands to stop and continued to come toward the officer. Consequently, fearing for his life, the officer was forced to fire his service handgun, striking the suspect.
The suspect has not yet been positively identified. He was transported by DCFD ambulance to Howard University Hospital where he was later pronounced dead.
The officer, identified as 37-year-old Michael A. Harvey, is a 14-year veteran and was not injured. He has been placed on routine administrative leave with pay.
