At about 3:15 p.m. on Tuesday, June 20, 2000, the operator of a 1985 Ford
Bronco experienced a tire blowout while in the unit block of Rhode Island
Avenue, NW. The driver exited the vehicle to check the blown out left
rear tire. While standing in the roadway, the operator was struck by a
1995 BMW 325i travelling southwest bound on Rhode Island Avenue. The Ford
Bronco operator was propelled some 65 feet.
The driver of the Bronco, whose identity is being withheld pending notification
of his next-of-kin, was transported by DCFD ambulance to the Washington
Hospital Center's MedSTAR Unit where he was pronounced dead at 3:55
p.m. The accident is under investigation by members of the Metropolitan
Police Department's Major Crash Investigations Unit.
