Pedestrians Struck On Calvert Street, NW

At about 3:10 this afternoon, the operator of a 1995 Honda Accord travelling westbound on Calvert Street apparently lost control of the auto at the intersection of Connecticut Avenue and Calvert Street, NW. The vehicle mounted the curb in the 2600 block of Calvert Street, NW and struck four people who were on the sidewalk.

One pedestrian, who has not been positively identified, was transported by United States Park Police helicopter to the Washington Hospital Center's MedSTAR Unit where she was pronounced dead at 5:50 p.m. Two others, identified as 18-year-old Threshon Morris (cousin of the mother of D'Montrall Morris) and 74-year-old Elizabeth McKenzie (addresses unknown at this time), were transported by DCFD ambulance to Georgetown University Medical Center where they were admitted in stable condition. The fourth person, a boy in a stroller, was pronounced dead on the scene. He has been identified as 1-year-old D'Montrall Morris, of the 100 block of Irvington Street, SW.

The vehicle operator, identified as 39-year-old Bernard Gregory Antoine, of the 5400 block of Connecticut Avenue, NW, has been arrested and charged with negligent homicide. He is scheduled to be arraigned tomorrow in D.C. Superior Court.

Members of the Metropolitan Police Department's Major Crash Investigations Unit are conducting the accident investigation. Thus far, it appears that excessive speed and driver inattention were contributing factors to the accident. Preliminary investigation indicates that alcohol consumption was not a contributing factor.
