At approximately 2:20 am on Sunday, April 24, 2005, police were called to the 1400 block of Cedar Street, SE. Upon arrival they located 16-year-old Lavelle Kendell Jones, of the 1100 block of Kennebec Street in Oxon Hill, Maryland, suffering from a gunshot wound to the head. DC Fire Department emergency medical personnel at the scene found no signs consistent with life. He was taken to the Office of the DC Medical Examiner and pronounced dead.
The preliminary investigation indicates that Mr. Jones was in the right front seat of a 1992 Pontiac Bonneville with friends in the 3600 block of Minnesota Avenue near B Street, SE. It was at this time that another vehicle reportedly drove up and fired a shot into the Pontiac and striking Mr. Jones in the head. At this time there is no description of the suspect vehicle.
At approximately 4:30 pm on June 30, 2005, members from the department's Violent Crimes Branch arrested 19-year-old Michael Blackson of the 1100 block of First Place, NW. He has been charged with Murder One While Armed in the death of Lavelle Kendell Jones. He is scheduled to be arraigned tomorrow in DC Superior Court.
