At approximately 12:05 am on Saturday, August 27, 2005, police on routine patrol responded to the 3700 block of Hayes Street, NE, upon hearing a gunshot. Upon arrival they located the body of 25-year-old Dennis Demetrius Smith, of the 500 block of Mellon Street, SE, suffering from an apparent gunshot wound to the head. He was taken to the Howard University Hospital and pronounced dead at 12:35 am.
The case is under investigation by members of the department's Violent Crimes Branch. Anyone with information about this case is asked to call police at (202) 727-9099.
The department currently offers a reward of up to $25,000 to anyone who provides information that leads to the arrest and conviction of the person or persons responsible for any homicide committed in the District of Columbia.
