At
approximately 2:15 p.m. on Thursday August 31, 2000, First
District officers responded to the 900 block of 14th Street SE. for
the report of a shooting. On the scene, 20 year-old Charles Lasane of
the 1800 block of P Street, SE, was found suffering from multiple gunshot
wounds to his body. The victim was transported to D.C. General Hospital
and pronounced dead on arrival.
A short time later, a Metro bus driver noticed a bus passenger acting
suspiciously on his bus. While in the 600 block of Pennsylvania Ave.,
NW, the driver activated his emergency notification signs on the exterior
of the bus and pulled over to draw police attention to his bus. A marked
United States Capitol Hill Police unit was in the area on an unrelated
crime and took the suspicious man off the bus and into custody without
any incident. Metropolitan Police Officers, arriving on the scene a short
time later, arrested 18-year-old Daron McMillan, of an unknown
address, and took him in for questioning on the recent 14th Street shooting.
On further investigation by First District Detectives, Mr. McMillian was
arrested and charged with the homicide of Charles Lasane. The investigation
into the circumstances of the shooting is continuing. Mr. McMillan is
scheduled to be arraigned tomorrow in D.C. Superior Court.
