At approximately 8:10 pm on Tuesday, June 22, 1999, a suspect armed with a handgun robbed the box office of the Uptown Theater, located at 3426 Connecticut Avenue, NW. Following the robbery, an employee of the theater reportedly chased the suspect on foot. Apparently, the gunman fired as he ran. Consequently, the employee was shot in the foot. Subsequently, the gunman fled the scene in a vehicle described as a Jeep Wrangler.
Second District officers who responded to the scene obtained a description of the suspect and the vehicle and broadcast a lookout. A short time later, Fourth District officers observed a vehicle matching the description of the suspect vehicle travelling northbound on Seventh Street, NW. The officers initiated a pursuit, during which suspect fired at them from the fleeing vehicle. None of his gunshots took effect.
Just before 8:30 pm, the suspect was apprehended in the 6400 block of Blair Road, NW when his vehicle collided with another vehicle and overturned. DCFD personnel responded to the scene and transported both the suspect and the occupant of the other vehicle involved in the collision to the Washington Hospital Center's MedSTAR Unit where they were admitted in stable condition.
The suspect has been identified as 41-year-old James Herbert Nero of the 700 block of Longfellow Street, NW. He remains hospitalized after the resulting traffic collision. He is presently charged with Assault On A Police Officer (APO) While Armed and faces possible additional charges charges as the investigation into this incident continues.
The theater employee who was shot in the foot was transported to an area hospital for treatment of the apparently non-life-threatening injury.
No other injuries were sustained inside of the theater during the commission of the robbery.
