Sexual Assault Suspect Arrested

On Monday, February 8, 1999, a 21-year-old female college student was reported to have been sexually assaulted while in her apartment located in the 500 block of 21st Street, NW. The alleged suspect in this case, who was a contract maintenance worker, reportedly gained entry to the victim’s apartment on the pretext of being there to make a repair. It was at this time that he allegedly sexually assaulted the woman who managed to fight him off before he fled.

The investigation into the case eventually led to the issuance of an arrest warrant charging First Degree Sexual Abuse against 32-year-old Efrain Antonio Ramirez of the 3000 block of Patrick Henry Drive in Fairfax, Virginia. At approximately 2:00 am today, Wednesday, June 23, 1999, agents with the Federal Bureau of Investigation , in New York, took Mr. Ramirez into custody. He was being held by police in Hempstead, New York. His arrest was the result of a subsequent investigation by members of the Joint Fugitive Task Force (composed of members of the Federal Bureau of Investigation, Metropolitan Police Department and U.S. Marshals). Mr. Ramirez will be returned to the District of Columbia pending extradition.
