At approximately 8:56 am, on Thursday, December 22, 2005, a woman was fatally struck at the intersection of 3^rd and D Streets, SW, as she was proceeding east across 3^rd Street, SW.  At that time a Metro bus, being operated by 24-year-old Matthew Johnson, of the 3000 block of 8^th Street, SE, was reportedly proceeding eastbound on D Street, SW, when the vehicle made a left turn to proceed northbound onto 3^rd Street, SW, striking the woman. The victim, who has been identified as 25-year-old Mia D. Banks, of the 3100 block of Brightseat Road in Landover, Maryland, was subsequently transported to the George Washington University Hospital, where she was pronounced dead.

The case is currently under investigation by members of the Metropolitan Police Department's Major Crash Investigations Unit. This was the 47th traffic fatality of the year in DC, the 16th involving a pedestrian.
