The Metropolitan Police Department's Latino Advisory Council will sponsor a Latino Community Public Safety Assembly from 9 am to 12 noon on Saturday, March 25, 2006, at the Carlos Rosario International Career Center, 1100 Harvard Street, NW. The assembly will be conducted in Spanish, with simultaneous interpretation into English for limited Spanish-speaking participants. Ward 1 DC Councilmember Jim Graham and Third District Commander Larry McCoy are among the scheduled participants.
The purpose of the assembly is to promote greater communication among the District's Latino residents and the Metropolitan Police Department. The assembly is the first in a series of quarterly community assemblies with Latinos that will be held in different areas of the city, and will be similar in format to the monthly meetings held in police service areas throughout the city.
The assembly will begin with a continental breakfast, served from 9-10 am. From 10-12 noon, various police and government speakers will describe crime trends against Latinos and efforts to address these. They will also describe the Crime Victims Assistance Program and the manner in which Latinos can access this service. Latino residents will have an opportunity to ask questions and express any concerns they might have about police operations during the entire program.
The Metropolitan Police Department's Latino Advisory Council consists of community, government, and police representatives. Current members include representatives of the Council of Latino Agencies, Councilmember Graham's Office, Neighborhood Services for Ward 1, the Court Services and Offender Supervision Agency, the DC Department of Human Services Income Maintenance Administration, the Mayor's Office on Latino Affairs, and the MPDC's Third District and Latino Liaison Unit.
