Traffic Advisory: Street Closings for the National Marathon on March 25

This is to advise the public that at approximately 7 am on Saturday, March 25, 2006, various streets in the District of Columbia will be closed to facilitate the National Marathon, as well as a half marathon that will be run at the same time.  The route of the marathon is as follows:

  • Westbound on East Capitol Street, NE, next to RFK Stadium. 
  • The runners will run once around RFK Stadium, then proceed west on East Capitol Street to Lincoln Park, go around Lincoln Park the wrong way using the south side of the park, back to East Capitol Street, to 3rd Street, SE. 
  • South on 3rd Street to Independence Avenue, SE, and then proceed west on Independence Avenue, SE, to Independence Avenue, SW.  
  • North on 3rd Street, SW, to 3rd Street, NW. 
  • West on Pennsylvania Avenue, NW, to Constitution Avenue, NW, then northwest on Virginia Avenue, NW, to 19th Street, NW. 
  • From 19th Street, NW, the race will turn around and go back along the same route, eastbound on Constitution Avenue, NW, to 9th Street, NW. 
  • South on 9th Street, NW, to Maine Avenue, SW. 
  • East on Maine Avenue, SW, then eastbound on M Street, SE, to 11th Street, SE, where the runners will proceed north to Potomac Avenue, SE. 
  • Northeast on Potomac Avenue, SE, to Pennsylvania Avenue, SE, then eastbound on Pennsylvania Avenue, SE, to Minnesota Avenue, SE. 
  • North on Minnesota Avenue, SE, to Randle Circle, SE, eastbound on Randle Circle to Fort Dupont Park. 
  • The race will then enter Fort Dupont Park and will exit onto eastbound Massachusetts Avenue, SE, toward Southern Avenue, SE, then southbound on Southern Avenue, SE, toward Pennsylvania Avenue, SE. 
  • At that point, the race will enter Prince George's County, Maryland.
  • The race will reenter the District on East Capitol Street at the Prince George's County line. The race will continue westbound on East Capitol Street to the start/finish line at RFK Stadium.

The public is also advised that efforts will be made to momentarily open intersecting streets during long breaks in the run and to open the route and all intersecting streets as soon as feasible.
