On Monday, April 23, 2001, at approximately 9:15 p.m., the operator of a small motorcycle reportedly collided with a sports utility vehicle at the intersection of Delaware Avenue and Canal Road, SW. The motorcyclist apparently was not wearing a helmet and sustained fatal injuries as a result of the collision.

The operator of the motorcycle identified as 20-year-old Carrington Matthews of the District, was transported to George Washington Hospital where he was pronounced dead. The operator of the sports utility vehicle who is also a District resident was not harmed in the accident.

The collision is currently under investigation by detectives of the Major Crash Investigations Unit. This is the fourteenth fatality in 2001 compared to eleven fatalities this time last year.
