Coaches & Assistant Coaches Wanted for Youth Violence Prevention Basketball League

The District of Columbia Housing Authority's (DHCA) Office of Resident Services is seeking qualified Metropolitan Police, DCHA Police Officers, and concerned citizens to serve as Coaches and Assistant Coaches for DCHA's Youth Violence Prevention Basketball League (YVPBL). The YVPBL is an initiative under the US Department of Housing and Urban Development funded Youth Violence Prevention (YVP) Grant. The purpose of the YVPBL is to steer at-risk youth away from crime and violence by providing them with positive recreational opportunities and life skills education. The use of police officers as coaches will create better relationships between police and public housing youth.

Duties and Responsibilities
League Coaches and Assistant Coaches will be responsible for the following:

  • Outreach and recruitment of public housing youth/team participants
  • Preparing and coaching teams for league play
  • Facilitating life skills sessions for team participants
  • Obtaining speakers and presenters for life skills sessions
  • Mentoring to, and role modeling for team participants
Length of Service
The service period for the selected Coaches and Assistant Coaches will be approximately four (4) months, beginning in June 2001. Coaches and Assistant Coaches will provide services for approximately seven to eight hours a week (including practices, life skills sessions, and games). The service schedule will be evenings and weekends.

Compensation
Volunteer services are wanted and greatly appreciated. Monthly compensation packages ranging from $300 (Assistant Coaches) to $400 (Coaches) are available.
