Fatal Police-Involved Shootinig

At approximately 2:30 this morning, plainclothes officers assigned to the Sixth District's Focus Mission Team, tasked to confiscate guns and recover stolen autos, stopped a car on the Amoco Gas Station lot located in the 1200 block of Good Hope Road, SE. One of the officers reportedly tried to remove the driver from the vehicle as the operator attempted to drive off. Apparently, the car struck 29-year-old Officer Andre Wright as the operator drove the car over the curbing of the gas station lot and into the street. It was at this time that Officer Wright and his partner, 33-year-old Officer Tracy Simmons, fired several rounds at the driver. The driver was struck at least once in the side of the chest.

The vehicle operator, identified as 36-year-old David L. Douglas, whose last known address was in the 5200 block of Kansas Avenue, NW, was transported to D.C. General Hospital where he was pronounced dead at 3:00 am.

Officer Wright was also transported to D.C. General Hospital where he was treated for his injuries and later released. Officer Simmons was not injured during this incident. Officer Wright a 5- year veteran and Officer Simmons a 9-year veteran have been placed on routine administrative leave with pay.

The shooting is currently under investigation by investigators assigned to the Force Investigation Team of the Metropolitan Police Department's Office of Professional Responsibility.
