At approximately
6:00 this morning, a northbound tractor-trailer overturned on
I-295 near Bolling Air Force Base as the result of a collision
with an automobile.
The accident
occurred when the operator of a 1996 Toyota Camry, who was also
travelling northbound on I-295, struck the left side guardrail
and ricocheted into the lane being used by the northbound tractor-trailer.
The tractor-trailer struck the Camry, overturned and subsequently
burst into flames.
Concerned
motorists extricated the truck driver from the vehicle and pulled
him to safety. The truck driver has been identified as 61-year-old
Charles Brown, of the 8000 block of Carey Branch Drive
in Fort Washington, Maryland. He was transported by ambulance
to D.C. General Hospital where he was admitted in stable condition.
The operator
of the Toyota Camry has been identified as 50-year-old Ossie
Howard, of the 500 block of East Howell Avenue in Alexandria,
Virginia. At this time, he has not complained of injuries. He
is currently under arrest and is being processed at the Seventh
District stationhouse.
Howard
has been charged with operating a motor vehicle without a permit
and driving under the influence.
