At
approximately 6:05 p.m., on Tuesday, April 25, members of the Metropolitan
Police Department's Second
District , assisted by members of the Fifth
District’s Focused Mission Team, apprehended a suspect wanted in connection
with yesterday’s multiple shooting incident
at the National Zoo .
The suspect, a 16-year-old male juvenile, was arrested without incident
when search and arrest warrants were served at a residence located in
the 1200 block of Neal Street, NE. The suspect's identity is being withheld
at this time because he is a juvenile. He was transported to the Second
District for processing.
The suspect has been charged with Assault With Intent to Kill (AWIK).
He is scheduled to be arraigned in D.C. Superior Court on Wednesday, April
26.
The shooting appears to be the result of an altercation between two groups
of people who were visiting the National Zoo on Monday.
"I want to publicly commend all the members of the Metropolitan Police
Department who worked so diligently to bring this case to a swift conclusion
by successfully apprehending a suspect just 24 hours after this tragic
and shocking incident took place," Chief
of Police Charles H. Ramsey said. The Chief also thanked the community
for its assistance in providing critical information to investigators.
