UPDATE:
As of 4 pm, on Sunday, July 29, 3-1-1 service in the District of Columbia
was back to normal. The Metropolitan Police Department wishes to thank
the community for its patience during the service interruption.
The Metropolitan Police Department reports a temporary disruption in its
3-1-1 non-emergency telephone
number. Technicians from the MPD and its telecommunications providers
are working to address technical problems with 3-1-1 and get the toll-free
number back in service as quickly as possible, while minimizing any inconvenience
to callers..
Individuals with non-emergency requests for police service may continue
to use the MPD's seven-digit non-emergency number, 727-1010.
Emergency 9-1-1 service has not
been affected by this situation. Callers should continue to use 9-1-1
for reporting police, fire, and medical emergencies.
Launched in January 2000, 3-1-1 is the District of Columbia's toll-free
number for reporting non-emergency, non-life threatening situations to
the MPD. Both 3-1-1 and 727-1010 are designed to make it easier for callers
to report non-emergency events without tying up valuable 9-1-1 lines that
are needed for true emergencies.
