Homicide on Benning Road, NE -- UPDATE: Suspect Arrested

On Sunday, July 30, 2006, at approximately 1:20 am, police responded to the 1700 block of Benning Road, NE to investigate the report of the sound of gunfire. Upon arrival, they located an adult male suffering from apparent stab wounds to his chest lying in the rear of 1705 Benning Road. DCFD emergency medical technicians who responded to the scene could find no life signs.

The victim, identified as 25-year-old John Stapleton, III, of the 600 block of 14th Street, NE, was later transported by morgue wagon to the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner for the District of Columbia.   

The case is currently under investigation by detectives assigned to the Violent Crimes Branch. Anyone who has information regarding this case is asked to call (202) 727-9099.

The Metropolitan Police Department is currently offering a reward of up to $25,000 to anyone who provides information that leads to the arrest and conviction of the person or persons responsible for any homicide committed in the District of Columbia.
