Suspect Arrested for First Degree Abuse of a Child

On Friday, August 4, 2006, at about 3:15 pm, a ten-year-old male juvenile ran into DC Fire Department Engine Company Number 30, located at 50 49th Street, NE, with an adult male relative in pursuit.  Reportedly, the child complained that the adult male relative, with whom he does not reside, had beaten him with what the victim described as a broom handle while he was inside of the suspect’s residence.  The members of Engine Company Number 30 prevented the adult male from doing the child further harm and from removing the child from the firehouse.  They also detained the suspect until police arrived on the scene to take him into custody.

Police arrested 29-year-old Lamar Smith, of the 4700 block of Central Avenue, NE.  He has been charged with First Degree Abuse of a Child and is scheduled to be arraigned tomorrow in DC Superior Court.

The child, whose identity is being withheld, was transported to an area hospital for treatment of apparently non-life-threatening injuries, which possibly include a broken arm.  Members of the DC Child and Family Services Agency are currently investigating the incident, as well.
