The National Campaign to Stop Red Light Running, a Washington, DC-based traffic safety organization, has teamed up with the Washington Nationals and area law enforcement and traffic safety organizations to observe 2006 Stop on Red Week to raise awareness about the dangers of red light running. Special limited edition “Get Home Safe” 2006 Stop on Red Week posters featuring Ryan Zimmerman of the Nationals will be handed out to fans at Wednesday night’s home game.
The Metropolitan Police Department and the Montgomery County Police Department will also be releasing the latest statistics regarding local red light running enforcement efforts.
National Stop on Red Week was created by the U.S. Federal Highway Administration and the American Trauma Society in 1998 to raise awareness about the dangers of red light running. It is held the first full week in August, historically the most dangerous month for fatal red light running crashes.
