The
Metropolitan Police Department is extending the warning period for motorists
caught speeding by photo radar cameras in the District of Columbia until
August 6, when actual ticketing under the new traffic safety program will
begin.
The photo radar speeding reduction program was announced on July 2. Since
then, the MPD has deployed mobile photo radar units at various locations
throughout the District as part of an initial warning period and public
education effort. The registered owners of vehicles caught speeding during
this period are receiving warning notices only.
Beginning August 6, the District will issue actual Notices of Infraction
to motorists caught speeding in approximately 60 enforcement zones that
are part of the initial photo radar deployment. While photo-enforced violations
do not carry points in DC, the fines for speeding range from $30 to $200
per violation.
Because the warning notices are an important part of the MPD's public
education effort on photo radar, Department officials decided to extend
the warning period to allow time for motorists caught speeding during
the first month of the program to receive their warning notices in the
mail.
