Gunman Shot by Police

On Monday, August 6, 2001, at about 2:27 pm, Seventh District patrol officers driving in the area of the 3200 block of 4th Street, SE observed a man whose shirt was drenched with blood. They stopped and exited their vehicle to render assistance. It was at this time that the subject produced a handgun and pointed it at the officers. In defense of their lives, the officers were forced to draw their service weapons and open fire on the gunman, striking him multiple times.

The gunman, who has not been identified, was transported by FEMS ambulance to the Washington Hospital Center's MedSTAR Unit, where he was admitted in critical condition.

The two officers who were forced to shoot the suspect were not injured.

The incident is currently under investigation by the department's Force Investigation Team and officials assigned to the Seventh District.
