On July 11, 2006, Chief of Police Charles H. Ramsey announced a Crime Emergency due to an increase in violent crime. The Crime Emergency initiative was officially implemented on July 12, 2006.

Curfew Violations
On July 21, the DC Council passed the Enhanced Crime Prevention and Abatement Emergency Amendment Act of 2006, giving the Mayor the authority to set alternative curfew hours. Beginning July 31, 2006, and continuing through September 28, 2006, alternative curfew hours for young people 16 and younger will be set from 10 pm to 6 am, every night of the week.
