Pedestrian Fatality on Georgia Avenue, NW

On Friday, August 10, 2001, at approximately 9:28 PM, a pedestrian was struck in the 4000 block of Georgia Avenue, NW.

The accident occurred when a 1997 Honda Accord travelling southbound in the left lane of the 4000 block of Georgia Avenue, NW, struck a pedestrian who was walking westbound from the east curb. The pedestrian fell in the roadway and was subsequently struck by a 1994 Toyota Camry, which passed on the right to avoid colliding with the braking Honda Accord. The operators of both vehicles remained on the scene of the accident.

The pedestrian, who has been identified as John Gilbert Francis, Sr., of the 700 block of Shepherd Street, NW, was transported to the Washington Hospital Center’s MedSTAR Unit where he was pronounced dead at 12:05 am on Saturday, August 11th.

The accident is currently under investigation by members of the Metropolitan Police Department’s Major Crash Investigations Unit.

This is the 35th traffic fatality in the District of Columbia for 2001.
