OAG Observes National Crime Victims' Rights Week

Washington, DC - Robert J. Spagnoletti, Attorney General for the District of Columbia, announced today the Office of the Attorney General (OAG) will mark the 25th Observance of National Crime Victims' Rights Week on April 10-16, 2005.

A special week of events is held every April to honor victims of crime and those who advocate on their behalf. The theme for this year is "Justice Isn't Served Until Crime Victims Are."

On Tuesday, April 12, and Thursday, April 14, from 8:30 am-10:30 am and 12:30 pm-2:30 pm in the Lobby of One Judiciary Square (441 4th Street NW), the OAG Victim Witness Assistance Unit (VWAU) will staff an information table to increase public awareness of the essential services provided by VWAU, and the work done by other local and national agencies.

The OAG VWAU specializes in assisting and supporting victims who have been subjected to serious and violent crimes by juvenile offenders. VWAU is committed to assisting victims by providing support and assistance throughout the entire judicial process; and making appropriate referrals to collaborating agencies and organizations to help meet victims' needs. It is a service that unfortunately is critical to so many, said Attorney General Spagnoletti. "The observance of National Crime Victims' Rights Week is not only essential to calling attention to the devastating effects of violence, but will also provide the necessary tools to reduce one's chances of being victimized or re-victimized."

"I encourage everyone in the District to drop by One Judiciary Square on April 12 and 14," said Mr. Spagnoletti, "and hope you will support the many other activities going on around the city in observance of National Crime Victims' Rights Week."
