General Spagnoletti says it is an opportunity to teach healthy relationship skills just as young people are starting to date. "My office assists hundreds of domestic violence victims every year - many of whom fell into a pattern of violence as teens, but were too afraid to tell a friend or loved one about the abuse," said General Spagnoletti. "It is my hope that National Teen Dating Violence Awareness and Prevention week will give our young people a voice and encourage them to speak out against domestic violence."
OAG also provided an Awareness and Prevention Toolkit created by the American Bar Association Steering Committee on the Unmet Legal Needs of Children free to area schools. The toolkits provide resources for teachers, administrators, students, parents and law enforcement to raise awareness about teen dating violence.
