Washington, DC - Attorney General Robert J. Spagnoletti is offering parents a novel way to remind their kids not to drink and drive on prom night: Send a Text Message.
Sending kids a reminder to stay safe during prom is just a mouse click away. Parents can log on to the Century Council website and register the cell phone number of their children and the date of the prom. During the prom, teens will receive a message, "Have fun 2night. Stay safe. Don't drink. We care." Parents can also receive a confirmation that their message was sent.
General Spagnoletti has joined with The Century Council to urge teens to have a safe prom and graduation season. "Teens and their cell phones can be practically inseparable. What better way to remind them to stay safe on one of the most important nights of their lives," said General Spagnoletti.
The prom text messaging initiative is spearheaded by The Century Council and is supported by CTIA-The Wireless Association®, the international association of the wireless telecommunications industry, and Teen Arrive Alive, dedicated to addressing teen driving safety.
According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), 713 youths under the age of 21 died in alcohol-related traffic accidents nationwide last year during prom and graduation season (April-June).
