Follow-up to the Office of the Clean City and IVY City Community Cleanup Efforts

The Office of the Clean City (OCC) is pleased to announce its recent partnership with several District agencies and faith-based groups yielded 26 tons of trash and debris, which was collected and hauled away.  Also, five abandoned vehicles were removed, DC FEMS representatives installed a number of smoke detectors in resident’s homes, DOH Rodent Control Division conducted baiting on 12 properties, and they are in the process of issuing abatement notices to an additional 15 properties in the area.  Local churches were able to meet, greet, feed and clothe many constituents from the neighborhood.

The OCC is a key component in the Mayor's initiative to clean up the District of Columbia.  The OCC establishes standards for assessing the cleanliness of the city using citizen-volunteer rating teams.

The Clean City Coordinator for the OCC serves as the overall program manager for executing the Clean City Initiative, focusing on four main areas:

  • Working with department heads that have operational responsibility for the development and coordination of Clean City program activities and the delivery of Clean City services.
  • Working with the Office of Intergovernmental Relations, applicable city agencies, and the DC Council to implement process improvements in the form of better laws that strengthen the ability of the city to protect public space.
  • Working closely with the Advisory Neighborhood Commissions (ANCs), civic associations, concerned citizens, and business groups to coordinate efforts and solicit involvement and support in the cleaning of the city.
  • Encouraging and supporting the development of programs to educate children on safety, sanitation "Do's and Don'ts," and litter prevention.

For information on how to volunteer and become a part of this project and future community clean ups, please call the OCC office at (202) 724–8967.
