(Washington, DC) – The Office of Police Complaints (OPC) recently welcomed its 2009 class of three summer interns and three law clerks. 

Since the agency’s inception in 2001, more than 60 college and law students have participated in the internship program.  Those selected gain valuable training and practical experience in police accountability issues.  In addition, the program offers interns an opportunity to interact with experts in the field through outside presentations and seminars.

“At OPC, we strive to provide our students with a variety of experiences during their time with the agency,” said Philip K. Eure, OPC’s executive director.  “Those who participate in our program develop a skill set that will further their personal and professional career goals, as well as gain an appreciation of the need for police oversight in Washington, D.C., and around the nation.”

College interns assist with investigations and community outreach, while law clerks conduct research and analysis on various legal issues on police reform.  Students receive academic credit for their work during the school year and a salary during the summer.

• Jonathan Cassidy, rising senior, Georgetown University
