(Washington, DC)–Herbert R. Tillery, Deputy Mayor for Operations and Interim Chief Procurement Officer today announced, on behalf of the DC Public Library, the award of a contract for an exterior restoration of the Mt. Pleasant Neighborhood Library to Garcete Construction Company of Washington, DC. The contract includes selective restoration work to the exterior doors and windows, stone masonry and ornamental railings and grates. It also includes improvements to security lighting, general landscaping and site improvements. Because of the library's prominence, the DC Public Library sought and received full support of the restoration project from Historic Mt. Pleasant and the DC Historic Preservation Office.
This $878,750 capital project is the first phase of a multi-million dollar total interior redesign and renovation of the Mt. Pleasant Neighborhood Library. It also marks the beginning phase of the library system's 21st century transformation initiative.
The Mt. Pleasant Neighborhood Library restoration project will begin the first week of August 2006 and is estimated to take six to nine months to complete. The branch will remain in operation and open to the public with limited disruption of service for the duration of the restoration. As the selection of design firms progresses, the DC Public Library will announce timeframes for community involvement; for details please log on to dc.gov and select the link for Learn More About the Library Transformation Initiative.
