US Conference of Mayors Selects Office on Ex-Offender Affairs (OEOA) as Example of Successful Reentry Initiative

The District of Columbia, Mayor’s Office on Ex-Offender Affairs (OEOA) headed by Interim Director Theodore Sweet was selected by the United States Conference of Mayors during their 2009 Survey as having one of the successful reentry initiatives in the country.

OEOA created a geographical mapping tool that lists all of the facilities in the District that provides services to the returning resident population. Currently the mapping tool is internally used by OEOA with a scheduled October 2009 release for the general public on the OEOA website. The mapping tool will be interactive and able to be updated on a daily basis. The mapping tool will be able to group service providers by Ward, type of resource provided and it has a feature that provides the user with navigation information on how to travel from one point to another using public transportation. OEOA did not require any additional resources from the government to create this resource.
