Anti-discrimination Notices Sent to District Businesses

The Office of Human Rights (OHR) has set in motion a plan to reach out to thousands of residents and business owners during the spring and summer months to raise awareness of the laws and regulations that prevent discrimination of any kind in the nation’s capital. The first step of this outreach initiative was launched this week in the form of over 1,500 letters and anti-discrimination posters mailed to businesses across the District. This effort was supported by the Alcoholic Beverage Regulation Administration (ABRA) and other groups that provided the names and addresses of the recipients.

The DC Human Rights Act of 1977, as amended, prohibits discrimination in any business employment setting based on race, color, religion, national origin, sex, age, disability, marital status, personal appearance, sexual orientation, gender identity or expressions, genetic information, family responsibilities, familial status, political affiliation, matriculation, source of income, and place of residence or business.

Business managers and/or owners based in the District of Columbia are required to inform their employees and customers of anti-discrimination laws in the form of posters. These posters must be placed in a noticeable area.
