The Office of Human Rights and Commission on Human Rights to Meet With the UN’s Special Rapporteur on Adequate Housing

The Office of Human Rights and Commission on Human Rights will hold a meeting with Ms. Raquel Rolnik, the UN’s Special Rapporteur on Adequate Housing. Ms. Rolnik was appointed as Special Rapporteur on adequate housing as a component of the right to an adequate standard of living and on the right to non-discrimination in this context by the United Nations Human Rights Council, in May 2008. As Special Rapporteur, she is independent from any government or organization and serves in her individual capacity. An architect and urban planner, Rolnik has extensive experience in the area of the right to housing and urban policies.

Ms. Rolnik’s meeting with the Office and the Commission will help her gain important information about the District, specifically in the area of homelessness and adequate housing.

Other District agencies will join in the meeting, including the Department of Human Services. In addition to visiting the District, Ms. Rolnik is also visiting New York, Wilkes-Barre, Chicago, New Orleans, Los Angeles and the Pine Ridge Indian Reservation as part of her tour of the US.
