Interior Work to Begin on Eastern Market Reconstruction

(Washington, DC) – Mayor Adrian M. Fenty announced that significant progress has been made on the interior renovation of the South Hall of Eastern Market to restore the building from last year’s devastating fire.  The roof and windows, both heavily damaged in the fire, along with the original skylight have been replaced as the first part of the exterior renovations that will bring back the 135-year-old market by next summer.

“We have completed the first steps for bringing the South Hall of Eastern Market back to life,” said Fenty. “My administration committed to rebuild not just the Eastern Market building, but to make sure that this tragic fire didn't dampen the spirit and the community tradition of this wonderful neighborhood.”

The renovation's next steps include reinstalling the protective artwork on the windows and excavating to prepare to install new utilities, air intake and storm-water management systems as well as mechanical, electrical and plumbing work.  The new windows will be fully operable, with historically-appropriate glass that will also help protect the food in the South Hall.

In addition to modern heating and air conditioning, the renovated Market will have sprinklers and new restrooms and access ramps to help make the project fully compliant with the Americans with Disabilities Act.  The original skylight and chimneys will be restored, as will the long-unused Market Manager’s office overlooking the South Hall.  The North Hall renovation will add a movable stage and gallery walls, a professional-level dance floor and additional theatrical lighting.

The Office of Property Management, which manages the property for the District, will soon issue a Request for Proposals for a new manager for the market to further ensure a successful marketplace for years to come.
