The Office of the Secretary of the District of Columbia is proud to partner with Serve DC to present the 2008 Martin Luther King, Jr. Day of Service. Mayor Fenty has proclaimed January 21, 2008 as “Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Day of Service”* in the District of Columbia, and he asks all residents to celebrate Dr. King's legacy by turning community concerns into citizen action.
On MLK Day 2007 over 10,000 District volunteers participated in 80 different community service projects, and the 2008 King Day of Service will be bigger and better than ever. Register your project now or view a listing of available projects!
A Kickoff Rally will be held at One Judiciary Square (441 4th Street, NW), at 10:30 am, followed by a march to the Center for Creative Non-Violence (425 2nd Street, NW) where participants will be involved in a series of service projects that will engage over 1000 volunteers.
The Office of the Secretary’s service project, “A Fresh Start for 2008,” is collecting toiletries for distribution to shelters that serve our homeless neighbors. Our goal is 100 percent participation by agency staff, and we welcome all members of the public and DC Government staff to drop off toiletries in any of our four collection sites:

- Office of Documents and Administrative Issuances: 441 4th Street NW, Suite 520 South
- Office of Notary Commissions and Authentications: 441 4th Street NW, Suite 810 South
- DC Archives: 1300 Naylor Court NW
Toiletries accepted include UNOPENED: soap, deodorant, shampoo, lotion, powder, toothbrushes, toothpaste, feminine supplies, etc.
Pain killers and medication of any kind will NOT be accepted.
