(Washington, DC) The Office of Tax and Revenue (OTR) has mailed more than 6,000 final notices and tax bills to property owners who are delinquent in paying their real property taxes for tax year 2006. Property owners have until May 30, 2007, to pay their taxes in full, including penalties and interest, to prevent the liens on their property from being sold at auction.
If a tax lien is sold at the annual Tax Sale, the owner is in danger of losing the property. The owner has up to the time of a court-ordered foreclosure to pay the debts and redeem the property. If the original owner redeems the property, the Tax Sale buyer will be reimbursed the amount paid plus interest and costs, as permitted by District law. The 2007 Tax Sale begins Monday, July 9, 2007.
Under District law, prior liens must be satisfied before payment is accepted for the current real property tax bill. Property owners who wish to settle their tax obligation should pay the amount indicated on the final bill.
Anyone with questions on the status of their property taxes should call OTR’s Customer Service Center at (202) 727-4TAX (727-4829) or visit the walk-in center on the first floor of 941 North Capitol Street, NE.
