Find Out About Veterans Day Activities in DC

Veterans Day is Tuesday, November 11, 2008. If you are in Washington, DC, there are many opportunities to pay tribute to our men and women in the Armed Forces - past, present, and future. And with the many events taking place at the national monuments and memorials, it is a great time to tour them as well.

  • Veterans Day at the World War II Memorial. At 8 am, a wreath-laying ceremony will be placed at the National World War II Memorial.

  • Veterans Day at Arlington National Cemetery. At 11 am, a wreath-laying ceremony will take place at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier, followed by a ceremony in the Memorial Amphitheater. For further information, call (703) 607-8000.

  • Story Telling at the Vietnam Women's Memorial. Throughout the day, storytelling will be featured near the Vietnam Women's Memorial, located at 23rd and Constitution Avenue, NW. For further information, call (866) 822-8963 or visit the Vietnam Women's Memorial Website.

  • Veterans Day at the Vietnam Veterans Memorial. At 1 pm, a ceremony featuring speakers, a color guard and a wreath-laying ceremony at the Vietnam Veterans Memorial will take place. For further information, call (202) 619-7222.

  • Veterans Day at the United States Navy Memorial.  At 1 pm, the Naval District of Washington will lay a wreath at the Lone Sailor Statue, located at the US Navy Memorial at 701 Pennsylvania Avenue NW. For further information, call (202) 737-2300.

  •  Veterans Day at the African-American Civil War Memorial. A wreath-laying ceremony will be held at the African-American Civil War Memorial, located at Vermont Avenue and U Street, NW. For further information, call (202) 426-6924 or (202) 667-2667.

  • The Women in Military Service for America Memorial. A wreath laying ceremony will be held at the Women in Military Service for America Memorial, located at the gateway to Arlington National Cemetery. For more information, call (800) 222-2294.

  • The First Division Memorial. A wreath-laying ceremony will be held at the First Division Memorial, the grassy panel at 17th Street, south of E Street, NW.

  • Veterans Day at Mount Vernon. Mount Vernon will admit all active duty or retired military free on Veteran's Day. Special activities include a patriotic community concert by the all-veteran barbershop chorus, The Harmony Heritage Singers and a wreath-laying ceremony. Visit the Mount Vernon Website.
