Commuting to Work: Bike? Walk? Drive?

In 2005, 45 percent of District residents drove to work. In contrast, nationally 88 percent drove to work, according to the US Census Bureau analysis of data from the 2005 American Community Survey (ACS).  This report presents some benefits of commuting choices and comparative data for the top 50 cities with the most workers age 16 and over in relation to those who use public transportation, walk to work, bike to work, carpool and work at home in 2005. When employers support biking or walking to work, surveys have found that they support an activity that is highly valued by employees, cost-effective, beneficial for the environment, and a good business decision.
