Economic Initiative for Central Washington Unveiled by Mayor Fenty

The Office of Planning partnered with the Downtown, NoMa, Mount Vernon Triangle, Capitol Riverfront, and Golden Triangle BIDs, as well as several other stakeholder groups to arrive at development and employment goals that can capitalize on the sixty million square feet of development potential proximate to the existing downtown.  Potential areas of development include Poplar Point, the SE and SW Waterfronts, and several neighborhoods north of Massachusetts Avenue.  The remaining development capacity in the traditional downtown is limited to about five million square feet, so it is critical that the District consider those underutilized areas where it is possible to build more residential, office, and retail space, as well as improvements to public space, parks, and transit.

The action agenda includes:

  • Strategies for neighborhood quality – priority places
  • Strategies for connecting great place to great place - corridors
  • Strategies for multi-modal transit: walking, biking, DC Circulator, car-sharing, street car, rapid bus, Metrorail, bus rapid transit etc.
  • Strategies for economic development
