(Washington, DC) - The DC Historic Preservation Office has completed proposed guidelines for repairs and alterations to Washington’s historic commercial buildings and for new construction projects in local historic districts. Washington's historic commercial buildings and the corridors in which they reside have a rich legacy that reflects the city's history and economic vibrancy. These guidelines are provided for property and business owners, architects and designers, developers, contractors, neighborhood historic preservation groups, city revitalization organizations, and city agencies who all play a role in ensuring that the District's commercial areas are attractive, dynamic and successful.

The document outlines the design review process and supplies information on how major storefront elements should be treated to ensure the retention of character-defining features and overall compatibility with the historic district. Included are recommendations for the treatment and design of storefront components such as display windows, entrances, lighting, and awnings, which reflect the evolution of commerce in the city over the years. The guidelines also provide design suggestions for new signage and for outdoor seating areas, both of which contribute to the vibrancy and enjoyment of Washington’s commercial corridors.

The guidelines will be available for distribution in the fall of 2008.
