(Washington, DC) - Real median household income in the United States climbed 1.3 percent between 2006 and 2007, according to a report released by the US Census Bureau.  Median household income for the District of Columbia increased to $54,317 in 2007, and was above the US median. Meanwhile, the nation’s official poverty rate in 2007 was 12.5 percent, not statistically different from 2006.  The poverty rate in the District of Columbia was higher than the national average in 2007, but down 3 percent from 19.6 percent in 2006 to 16.4 percent in 2007.

The District of Columbia had the highest ratio of women’s-to-men’s earning (93.4 percent).  In fact, there was no statistically significant difference between women’s and men’s earnings in Washington, DC.
