SEO Changes Name to the Office of the State Superintendent of Education

The DC State Education Office (SEO) today announced that it is officially renamed the Office of the State Superintendent of Education (OSSE).

Mayor Adrian M. Fenty proposed and the Council of the District of Columbia passed the Education Reform Act granting the Mayor governance over the District of Columbia public school system. The new legislation assigns the OSSE operational authority for state-level functions.

Deborah A. Gist, now the State Superintendent of Education, states, “Today we begin a new era of a high-performing, transparent agency that sets proactive policies, exercises vigilant oversight and directs resources. This is a new opportunity to provide a comprehensive, statewide approach to public education in the District of Columbia.”
