DC State Board of Education Approves Early Start for Student Residency Verification

The DC State Board of Education (SBOE) adopted a resolution approving to change the official start date for the residency verification process effective immediately. The resolution was adopted this evening at a special meeting of the State Board of Education. There is a 30-day comment period on the proposed permanent regulations that ends on July 5, 2008.

The original residency verification process was from July 1 until October 5 of each year.  As a result of the Board’s action, parents can participate in the residency verification process for the following school year starting on June 5.  The purpose of the emergency rulemaking will enable more District students to start the school year on time. District of Columbia Public Schools and Public Charter Schools can also begin the student residency verification process prior to the end of a given school year.

The Board also held a working session to discuss charter school accreditation organizations and home schooling policies. A vote is scheduled on the proposed home schooling policies on June 18, 2008.
